Contouring is all the rage nowadays, but in the makeup industry it has been used for countless years to define bone structure and make features stand out. Once reserved for theater, it now plays a powerful role in women’s daily makeup routines. Learn the secrets behind it so you can contour like a pro!

Pick a Shade

Picking the right color to contour with can be challenging. Many women make the mistake of using orange-toned powder to contour, which results in an unnatural and uneven look. For the best results, use a matte color that is no more than two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Depending on your undertone, you may need a cool, warm or neutral color. If you aren’t sure what kind of undertone you have or don’t want to hassle with it, pick a neutral shade.

Find the Right Formula

Contouring products are most commonly available in powder and cream formulas. If you have oily skin, a powder-based product is ideal because it won’t smudge or streak throughout the day. If you have dry skin, opt for a cream-based product that won’t appear powdery or sink into fine lines.

Follow Your Bone Structure

Your natural bone structure should act as your guide when it comes to applying contouring products. Swipe color along your cheekbone in a downward slanted motion and across your natural jawline. You can also apply it lightly across your temples for a more defined look.

Give Yourself a Nose Job

Contouring can create the illusion of a more symmetrical nose when applied properly. Swipe color along the sides of your nose and dab it on the tip to make it appear smaller. Finish it off with a light application of highlighting powder along the bridge of the nose.

Achieve a Sun-Kissed Glow

Shimmery bronzer can be used instead of traditional contouring products to create a healthy and natural-looking tan. However, avoid unnatural hues such as orange. For the best results, pick a bronzer that is no more than two shades darker than your skin tone and apply it along your cheekbones and jawline.
